The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has declared what it describes as a decisive fight to protect the democracy, announcing plans to embark on a nationwide demonstration on Thursday, August 6, 2026, over what it alleges is the growing politicisation of the country’s justice system and a deliberate erosion of the rule of law under the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government.
The protest, which the opposition party says will be held simultaneously across the country, follows the recent Court of Appeal decision that quashed the conviction of former Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC) Chief Executive Sedina Tamakloe-Attionu, a judgment that has generated intense political debate.
According to the NPP, the demonstration is intended to draw national attention to what it describes as selective justice, abuse of state institutions and increasing threats to the constitutional democracy.
Court Ruling Sparks Political Storm
The latest protest announcement comes against the backdrop of a landmark Court of Appeal judgment that acquitted and discharged Sedina Tamakloe Attionu.
The former MASLOC Chief Executive had earlier been convicted by the High Court and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment after being found guilty on charges including stealing, money laundering and willfully causing financial loss to the state.
However, a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal overturned the conviction and acquitted her, a decision that has since attracted contrasting reactions from the country’s two major political parties.
While the legal team for the former MASLOC boss welcomed the ruling as a victory for justice, the Attorney-General has already announced plans to challenge the decision at the Supreme Court.
NPP Alleges Double Standards
Addressing journalists, the NPP argued that the Court of Appeal’s decision forms part of what it believes is a worrying pattern in which individuals perceived to be politically aligned with the governing NDC receive favourable treatment while political opponents are aggressively prosecuted.
The party insists the issue extends beyond a single court case and reflects what it describes as an increasing weaponisation of state institutions for political purposes.
According to the NPP, recent developments within the justice sector have created public concerns about equal application of the law and the independence of institutions responsible for fighting corruption.
The party maintains that its planned demonstration is aimed at defending constitutional governance, judicial independence and public confidence in democratic institutions.
Coalition of Political And Civil Society Groups
Unlike previous political demonstrations organised solely by the NPP, party leaders say the August 6 march will involve a broader coalition comprising opposition political parties, civil society organisations, professional bodies, student associations and youth groups.
The organisers say the objective is to unite various stakeholders who share concerns about governance, accountability and constitutional rule.
The demonstration is expected to take place nationwide, with major mobilisation expected in Accra and other regional capitals.
Growing Political Tensions
The announcement comes amid heightened political tensions following a series of high-profile court cases involving former government officials.
Since assuming office, the NDC administration has defended its anti-corruption agenda, insisting that prosecutions are based solely on evidence gathered through lawful investigations and not political considerations.
Government officials have repeatedly maintained that independent institutions, including the Attorney-General’s Department and the courts, are operating within their constitutional mandates.
However, the NPP argues that recent developments paint a different picture and insists public protest has become necessary to defend Ghana’s democratic institutions.
Protest to Focus on Rule of Law
According to the party, the August 6 demonstration will focus on demanding accountability, respect for constitutional governance, equal application of the law and protection of the country’s democratic institutions.
