The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has overturned the disqualification of Kwasi Bonzoh, officially clearing him to contest the party’s Western Regional Executive Election after the National Steering Committee upheld his petition against the outcome of the regional vetting process.
The decision marks another significant intervention by the party’s highest internal appeals body as the NPP continues preparations for its Regional Executive Elections, which form part of its nationwide reorganisation exercise ahead of the 2028 general elections.
In a letter dated August 3, 2026, the Acting National Chairman, Danquah Buttey Smith, communicated the decision of the National Steering Committee to the Western Regional Steering Committee, the National Executive Committee, the Western Regional Elections Committee, the Western Regional Appeals Committee and Kwasi Bonzoh, former DCE for Ellembelle.
According to the letter, the National Steering Committee reached the decision during its meeting held on Monday, August 3, 2026, after considering a petition submitted by Bonzoh pursuant to Regulation 9 of the Rules and Regulations for the Conduct of the Regional Executive Committee Elections.
The petition challenged the outcome of the vetting process that had initially prevented him from participating in the regional executive race, contesting for the Regional secretary.
After reviewing the petition and deliberating on the matter, the National Steering Committee resolved that Bonzoh should be allowed to contest the election.
The party therefore directed that he be officially cleared as a candidate for the Western Regional Executive Election.
The Acting National Chairman instructed the Western Regional Elections Committee and all relevant party organs to immediately implement the decision and ensure full compliance with the directives issued by the National Steering Committee.
“I write to communicate the decision of the National Steering Committee of the Party regarding the outcome of the vetting of the Regional Executive Elections in the Western Region,” the letter stated, adding that the committee had resolved to clear Kwasi Bonzoh to participate in the elections.
The directive further instructed the Western Regional election authorities to take the necessary administrative steps to give immediate effect to the ruling.
The latest development comes amid the NPP’s ongoing regional executive elections across the country.
The party has already completed polling station, electoral area and constituency executive elections as part of a broader restructuring programme following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.
Regional executive elections are expected to elect new regional chairmen, vice chairpersons, secretaries, organisers, treasurers, women’s organisers, youth organisers, communications officers and Nasara coordinators who will lead the party in their respective regions.
The NPP has consistently maintained that its internal electoral processes will be guided by constitutional provisions, fairness and transparency, with aggrieved aspirants given the opportunity to seek redress through the party’s appeals mechanisms before the elections are held.
