The leadership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has convened an emergency meeting following the conviction and sentencing of its Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, in the Samreboi illegal mining case.
In a statement issued on July 20, 2026, and signed by the party’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, the NPP disclosed that the meeting is being attended by the party’s national leadership, its flagbearer, and members of the party’s legal team to undertake a comprehensive review of the High Court’s judgment and determine the party’s next line of action.
According to the statement, the emergency deliberations are intended to carefully assess the court’s decision in the criminal case involving Chairman Wontumi before the party announces its official position.
The NPP indicated that the outcome of the meeting, including any decisions taken, will be communicated to the public in due course.
The development follows the judgment of the Accra High Court, which found Chairman Wontumi and his company, Akonta Mining Limited, guilty on charges relating to the unlawful assignment of mineral rights without ministerial approval and facilitating unlicensed mining operations on the Samreboi mining concession in the Western Region.
While awaiting the outcome of the leadership meeting, the party has appealed to its members across the country to remain calm and united.
Justin Kodua Frimpong urged supporters to rally behind the party’s leadership during what he described as a challenging period, calling on members to remain disciplined, steadfast and committed to the values and interests of the New Patriotic Party.
The statement did not indicate whether the party would support an appeal against the High Court’s decision or announce any further legal or political measures, stating only that its official position would be made public after the emergency consultations have been concluded.
