Okyeman Drags Murtala To Parliament Over Insults On JB Danquah

A group of concerned citizens from Okyeman, led by the Coalition for Youth Development in Okyeman in the Eastern Region, has petitioned Parliament to take action against the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Murtala Muhammed, over his alleged derogatory comments about the late J.B. Danquah.

According to the group, Murtala Muhammed made false and denigrating remarks about J.B. Danquah, a key figure in Ghana’s independence movement, describing him as a traitor and an agent of the CIA.

The group considers these comments to be not only insulting but also misleading, distorting historical facts and tarnishing the legacy of J.B. Danquah.

J.B. Danquah, a renowned Ghanaian politician, lawyer, and historian, played a crucial role in the country’s struggle for independence.

He was a founding member of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and a key figure in the drafting of Ghana’s constitution.

J B Danquah’s contributions to Ghana’s development and independence are widely recognized, and his legacy is still celebrated today.

The group, dressed in red bands, submitted their petition to the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Djetror, calling for the Speaker of Parliament to compel Murtala Muhammed to retract his statement and apologize to J.B. Danquah’s family and the people of Ghana.

The petitioners also demanded that the remarks be expunged from the parliamentary record.

Yaw Adomako Baafi, a member of the Dankwa-Busia Tradition, condemned Murtala Muhammed’s remarks, emphasizing that Ghanaian leaders deserve respect, not disrespect.

“Our leaders deserve respect, not such unfortunate comments. J.B. Danquah was a man of conviction who fought for Ghana’s progress. He sacrificed for this country and was murdered. We should be celebrating his contributions, not tarnishing his legacy. The MP must apologize for his words,” he said.

The Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Djetror, assured the group that their concerns would be addressed, stating that Parliament remains responsive to the needs and concerns of the public. The matter is expected to be addressed in due course.
