The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has inaugurated its National Elections Committee, with former Suhum Member of Parliament Frederick Opare-Ansah appointed as Chairman to oversee the party’s crucial national executive elections scheduled for later this year.
The inauguration, conducted by the Acting National Chairman, Chairman Butey, marks another significant milestone in the NPP’s ongoing internal reorganisation as the party prepares to elect a new national leadership to spearhead its rebuilding agenda ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The National Elections Committee has been tasked with planning, organising and supervising all activities leading to the National Delegates Conference, where delegates from across the country will elect national officers in accordance with the party’s constitution.
The appointment of Mr. Opare-Ansah comes at a time when the NPP is concluding a nationwide internal electoral process that began with polling station elections, followed by electoral area, constituency and regional executive elections.
The exercise was initiated after the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, with the objective of restructuring its grassroots and national leadership.
Serving as Secretary to the committee is former Deputy Finance Minister and Member of Parliament, Abena Osei Asare, who will coordinate the committee’s administrative work and electoral processes leading to the National Conference.
Other members of the committee are Mr. Evans Nimako, Madam Oboshie Sai Cofie, Anthony Abayifa Karbo, Salam Ama Appianin Damata, Mr. Eric Ntori, and Mr. Frank Davies, Esq.
The party also announced that the Ashanti Regional Chairman will automatically become a member of the committee upon the successful conclusion of the Ashanti Regional Executive Elections.
According to the Office of the Acting National Chairman, the committee’s mandate extends beyond organising the National Delegates Conference to ensuring that the election of national officers is conducted in a credible, transparent and constitutionally compliant manner.
The National Elections Committee is expected to work closely with the National Secretariat and other statutory organs of the party to supervise nominations, vetting, balloting and all other electoral processes leading to the election of national executives.
The inauguration follows a series of reforms introduced by the NPP after recommendations by the Prof. Mike Oquaye Election Review Committee, which was established to examine the factors behind the party’s loss in the 2024 elections.
Those reforms have included changes to internal election regulations, digital payment systems for nominations, membership verification and strengthened appeals mechanisms.
Earlier this month, the party announced September 19, 2026, as the date for its National Delegates Conference, where delegates will elect a new National Chairman, General Secretary, National Organiser, National Treasurer, Women’s Organiser, Youth Organiser, Communications Director and other national executives to lead the party into the next electoral cycle.
In a statement announcing the inauguration, the NPP congratulated members of the National Elections Committee and expressed confidence in their ability to discharge their responsibilities with integrity, fairness, transparency and professionalism.
Party officials believe the successful work of the committee will be critical in ensuring a smooth, peaceful and credible election of national officers as the NPP seeks to strengthen party unity and reposition itself for a return to power in the 2028 general elections.
