The Eastern Regional Executive Committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed strong reservations about a recent statement by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) regarding former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
The OSP’s attempt to dismiss a reported raid on Ofori-Atta’s residence as “staged” has been deemed reckless and prejudicial, undermining the credibility of the institution.
In a statement, the Regional NPP Chairman, Jeff Konadu Addo, said the OSP’s statement is particularly disturbing given Ofori-Atta’s distinguished service as Ghana’s Finance Minister.
During his tenure, he implemented policies that delivered remarkable economic results, including a surge in GDP growth, a reduction in fiscal deficit, control of inflation, financial sector reform, and effective debt management.
The committee cited specific achievements, including Ghana’s GDP growth rising from 3.4% in 2016 to 8.1% in 2017, making Ghana one of the fastest-growing economies in the world.
Additionally, the fiscal deficit decreased from 9.3% of GDP in 2016 to 4.8% by 2018, demonstrating fiscal discipline.
The OSP’s public condemnation of Ofori-Atta without substantive proof of wrongdoing raises concerns about the institution’s commitment to due process and ethical standards.
The committee argued that the OSP’s statement violates key constitutional and ethical principles, including the presumption of innocence, the right to dignity, and prosecutorial ethics.
The NPP Eastern Regional Executive Committee called on the OSP to take steps to rectify the situation and uphold the principles of due process, professionalism, and fairness.
The committee emphasized the need for an impartial justice system, not one that seeks to tarnish reputations based on political expediency.
