What began as a ceremonial gathering to mark a major healthcare project in Agona Amenfi ended in chaos on Friday after police officers shot and disarmed an armed suspect following a tense confrontation at the Agona Amenfi Chief’s Palace in the Amenfi Central District of the Western Region.
The dramatic incident occurred during a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of a new maternity ward for the community health centre, an event attended by traditional leaders, local authorities, residents and other dignitaries.
According to eyewitness accounts, the ceremony was briefly interrupted when organizers realized that the ceremonial hoe required for the sod-cutting exercise had been left behind at the palace.
A palace messenger was subsequently dispatched to retrieve the tool so the programme could proceed.
However, upon arriving at the palace, the messenger reportedly encountered a man believed to be a member of the local royal family who was dressed in a traditional smock and adorned with protective talismans and charms. Witnesses said the suspect prevented the messenger from entering the palace grounds, leading to a heated confrontation.
The situation quickly escalated when the suspect allegedly attacked the palace messenger with a cutlass, inflicting multiple injuries. News of the attack spread rapidly through the community, prompting an emergency response from the Ghana Police Service.
Police officers who arrived at the scene reportedly attempted to calm the situation and persuade the armed suspect to surrender peacefully.
However, the man refused to comply with repeated instructions from security personnel and continued to brandish the weapon.
The standoff soon attracted large crowds of anxious residents who gathered around the palace grounds to observe the unfolding drama.
Some community members reportedly believed the suspect possessed spiritual protection that made him immune to bullets, a belief that heightened tension and uncertainty among onlookers.
As negotiations failed and concerns grew over public safety, police officers were forced to take decisive action. After several unsuccessful attempts to disarm the suspect, officers reportedly fired their weapons, striking him in one hand and disabling his ability to wield the cutlass.
The injury allowed security personnel to overpower and disarm him, bringing the standoff to an end.
Videos circulating on social media captured moments of the operation, showing heavily armed police officers confronting the suspect within the palace compound while residents watched from a safe distance.
Both the injured palace messenger and the suspect were subsequently transported to a medical facility for treatment. Their conditions have not yet been officially disclosed.
The incident has sent shockwaves through Agona Amenfi, with many residents expressing concern over the violent disruption of what was intended to be a community development event focused on improving maternal healthcare services.
The construction of the maternity ward had been welcomed by residents as an important intervention aimed at improving healthcare delivery for pregnant women and newborns in the area.
However, the shocking events at the palace have temporarily overshadowed the significance of the project.
Meanwhile, police are expected to conduct further investigations into the circumstances surrounding the attack and determine what may have motivated the suspect’s actions.
