Portugal wrapped up their preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Nigeria in an international friendly on Wednesday night, overcoming a resilient Super Eagles side that threatened to spoil the Europeans’ final tune-up before the global showpiece.

The match served as Portugal’s last competitive test ahead of their World Cup campaign and exposed both the strengths and vulnerabilities of the European nation as they were forced to battle back after Nigeria erased an early deficit.

A late strike from Francisco Conceição ultimately spared Portugal from an underwhelming result and ensured they head into the tournament with momentum and confidence.

Portugal entered the encounter looking to fine-tune their preparations ahead of a challenging Group K campaign at the World Cup, where they are set to face Uzbekistan, Colombia and DR Congo.

The Portuguese side started brightly and dominated possession in the opening exchanges, eventually finding the breakthrough in the 23rd minute through Pedro Neto.

The goal came after an incisive attacking move involving Diogo Dalot, whose intelligent pass inside the penalty area found Neto unmarked. The winger showed remarkable composure, guiding his effort into the bottom-right corner beyond the reach of the goalkeeper to hand Portugal a deserved lead.

However, Nigeria refused to be intimidated by their more fancied opponents and gradually grew into the game. The Super Eagles, despite missing out on qualification for the 2026 World Cup, demonstrated the quality and fighting spirit that have made them one of Africa’s traditional football powerhouses.

Their persistence paid off eight minutes before halftime when midfielder Fisayo Dele-Bashiru produced a well-weighted pass into the penalty area. Akor Adams timed his run perfectly and calmly slotted a low effort through the middle to beat the Portuguese goalkeeper and restore parity for Nigeria.

The equaliser injected fresh energy into the African side and highlighted the attacking threat they continue to possess despite their absence from the World Cup. The goal ensured both teams went into the break level at 1-1, setting up an intriguing second half.

Following the restart, Portugal sought to reassert control while Nigeria remained dangerous on the counterattack. As the contest appeared destined to end in a draw, Francisco Conceição delivered the decisive moment of the match in the 75th minute.

The winger showcased his individual brilliance with a dazzling solo run, gliding past several defenders before unleashing a precise low shot from the edge of the box. The effort found the back of the net and restored Portugal’s advantage, ultimately proving to be the winning goal.

Portugal successfully held on to their lead for the remainder of the match, securing a morale-boosting victory just days before the start of the World Cup. While the performance was far from convincing, the result offers encouragement to the Portuguese camp as they prepare to compete on football’s biggest stage.
