The Parliamentary Caucus on Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) has intensified its push for stronger disability inclusion in the governance system following a meeting with the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, to deliberate on concerns affecting persons with disabilities.
The engagement brought together members of the caucus, including the Member of Parliament for Suhum, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, popularly known as Protozoa, as Parliament seeks to give greater attention to issues surrounding the rights, welfare and participation of PWDs in national development.
At the centre of the discussions was the need to strengthen Ghana’s disability rights framework and ensure that persons with disabilities are not excluded from opportunities and decision-making processes because of physical, social or institutional barriers. The caucus also raised the broader need for improved accessibility and support systems for PWDs across the country.
The meeting with the Speaker comes at a time when disability advocates have increasingly called for a shift from policies that treat persons with disabilities primarily as beneficiaries of social support to approaches that recognize them as equal participants and contributors to national development.
For Parliament, the caucus provides an avenue through which disability-related concerns can be brought more directly into legislative and oversight discussions. Its engagement with the Speaker is therefore expected to strengthen the institutional attention given to disability issues and encourage Parliament to consider accessibility and inclusion in policymaking.
Frank Asiedu Bekoe has previously been involved in parliamentary advocacy on disability matters. In May 2026, he represented the Parliamentary Caucus on Persons with Disabilities at a stakeholder engagement in Accra organized by the Women with Disability Development and Advocacy Organization (WODAO) in partnership with the Network of Women with Disabilities Africa (NEWDA).
That engagement focused on strengthening the women with disabilities movement and advancing the ratification of the African Disability Protocol in Ghana.
Speaking on behalf of the caucus at the time, the Suhum MP emphasized the importance of equal opportunities and stronger legal protections for PWDs, particularly women and girls who often face multiple layers of discrimination.
