The story of Kofi Offeh, a 36-year-old Ghanaian resident of Scotland, has taken a dramatic turn after years of flamboyantly styling himself as the monarch of a self-proclaimed “Kubala Kingdom.”
His arrest on October 2, 2025, alongside two associates, has not only shaken the small community where he lived but also reignited global conversations about self-proclaimed royalty, identity, and the limits of personal freedom in modern society.
From Ordinary Migrant to “Kubala King”
Kofi Offeh, who moved to Scotland more than a decade ago, began attracting attention in the mid-2010s when he started publicly identifying as a monarch of a non-existent “kingdom” allegedly located in the Scottish Borders.
He crowned himself “Kubala King” and surrounded himself with a small group of loyalists, including women he described as “queen mothers.”
Dressed in symbolic regalia and adopting royal titles, Offeh attempted to build an aura of authority that many in his circle treated with reverence.
For some members of Scotland’s African diaspora, his performance was interpreted as a playful nod to cultural heritage and traditions back home in Ghana, where chieftaincy institutions remain a respected part of social life.

Over the years, Kofi Offeh’s activities drew criticism from community leaders and concerned residents who viewed his actions as misleading and potentially unlawful.
His proclamations of sovereignty, the creation of ceremonial positions, and attempts to mimic traditional authority raised red flags.
Questions soon emerged about whether he was using his self-styled monarchy for personal gain.
While no official evidence has yet been released, suspicions about financial exploitation and manipulation of followers began to circulate, prompting increased attention from authorities.
The Arrest and Legal Questions
On October 2, 2025, police confirmed the arrest of Offeh and two close associates.
While details of the charges have not been fully disclosed, his detention marks the collapse of the elaborate fantasy monarchy he had sustained for years.
Authorities are expected to present a case in court that could range from charges of fraud and misrepresentation to possible breaches of public order laws.
