Shatta Wale Claims Credit For Shaping Dancehall Lyrics

Ghanaian dancehall heavyweight Shatta Wale has stirred fresh controversy in the music industry after asserting that he played a major role in shaping the lyrical style of several top Ghanaian artistes.

Speaking during a TikTok live session over the weekend, the outspoken artist claimed that his early approach to performance—particularly during his days as Bandana—influenced how many of today’s leading musicians deliver their lyrics on stage.

According to him, his freestyle techniques and stagecraft set the foundation for modern Ghanaian dancehall expression.

Shatta Wale specifically mentioned artists such as Stonebwoy, Iwan, Epixode, and Jupitar, suggesting that they adopted elements of his lyrical delivery style.

He also referenced Sarkodie in a broader comparison, arguing that public debates comparing him to global icons often fail to fully appreciate local artistry.

Beyond influence, Shatta Wale went further to critique the streaming performance of some of his peers, including Samini, attributing their lower numbers to what he described as weaker lyrical delivery.

His remarks have since ignited widespread debate across social media, with fans and industry players divided over the extent of his influence. While some supporters agree that his impact on Ghana’s dancehall scene is undeniable, others argue that the genre’s evolution has been shaped by multiple contributors over the years.

The comments come at a time when conversations around legacy, influence, and dominance in Ghana’s music industry are intensifying, especially as major award schemes and industry recognitions approach.
