In a major diplomatic development signaling growing cooperation between Africa and Eastern Europe, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to visit Ghana following a high-level conversation with President John Dramani Mahama.

The dialogue, held via phone, focused on strategic bilateral cooperation, particularly in agriculture, food security, and emerging technology.

The talks between the two leaders mark a significant step in Ghana’s effort to strengthen international partnerships for economic recovery and national resilience.

With food security becoming a top agenda across the globe—especially in regions vulnerable to climate shocks and geopolitical instability—the agreement signals a shared commitment to turning challenges into collaborative opportunities.

One of the key outcomes from the presidential dialogue was a mutual agreement to begin ministerial-level discussions focused on agricultural development.

Ukraine, a global agricultural powerhouse despite the ongoing conflict with Russia, pledged to support Ghana in establishing a logistics hub for food storage and distribution.

This facility, according to sources close to the presidency, will serve as a strategic center to reduce post-harvest losses, improve food supply chains, and strengthen the leadership role in ensuring food stability across West Africa.

President Zelenskyy assured his Ghanaian counterpart that a Ukrainian technical and policy delegation will visit Accra in the coming weeks to assess opportunities and commence formal talks.

The Ukrainian government expressed particular interest in Ghana’s agro-processing sector, irrigation projects, and supply chain logistics, as well as collaborative research between agricultural institutions in both countries.

Beyond agriculture, the two leaders discussed potential cooperation in aerospace and defense technology. Ghana reportedly expressed interest in acquiring Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to assist with border surveillance and monitor security risks in the northern parts of the country, particularly as Ghana strengthens efforts to combat terrorism and illegal migration near the Sahel region.

President Mahama extended an official invitation to President Zelenskyy to visit Ghana, which the Ukrainian leader warmly accepted.

According to diplomatic insiders, the visit will not only formalize the agricultural and technology agreements but will also be symbolic of a new chapter in Ghana–Ukraine relations.

The anticipated visit and collaboration come at a time when Ghana is positioning itself as a regional logistics and food security hub, leveraging its democratic credentials and stable governance.

For Ukraine, the partnership presents an opportunity to deepen ties with African states, many of whom have maintained non-aligned positions amid the ongoing war in Eastern Europe. The forthcoming ministerial talks and potential state visit are expected to draw interest from investors, development agencies, and global food security organizations, especially as both countries seek practical solutions to local and global challenges.
