Ursula Declares Bid For NPP General Secretary

By Daniel Bampoe

Former Minister for Communications and Digitalisation, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, has officially declared her intention to contest for the position of General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), urging party faithful to unite, reorganize, and reignite the party’s vision as it prepares to reclaim power from what she described as an “accident-of-a-government.”

In a powerful message released on her birthday, the former Ablekuma West legislator reflected on the internal challenges and disunity that have rocked the NPP following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Describing the period as a “stormy face-off” that left the party “bruised” and “battered,” she acknowledged the emotional and political toll the setback had taken on the party’s base. However, she expressed unwavering optimism that the NPP’s spirit of resilience, rooted in its founding in Saltpond, would lead to renewal and resurgence.

According to Owusu-Ekuful, the party’s current struggles represent a “necessary phase of self-introspection and diagnosis,” meant to strengthen the foundation for reorganization.

She emphasized that the caretaker National Democratic Congress (NDC) government currently in power did not win because of popular preference, but rather through “lies and lofty promises” that eroded public trust in the NPP.

“The NDC is there not because they are preferred,” she wrote, “they are there because they lied their way into government.”

She further asserted that Ghanaians’ belief in the NPP could and would be restored, provided the party rebuilds confidence from the polling stations to the national leadership.

Owusu-Ekuful used the occasion to rally support for her leadership bid, describing herself as “the fighter you have always known — nurtured, proven, and prepared.”

She pledged to work with the party’s grassroots to restore unity and position the NPP as the “vehicle of change” ahead of the December 2028 elections.

“I come before you in all humility to ask you, dear patriots, to join me on this rescue mission as your next General Secretary,” she appealed, adding that the task ahead requires renewed commitment, organization, and a shared vision to win back the confidence of Ghanaians.

The former minister’s declaration comes at a time when calls for leadership renewal within the NPP have intensified, with many party loyalists demanding introspection and structural reforms after the electoral loss.
Owusu-Ekuful’s reputation as a fierce advocate for women’s empowerment, digital innovation, and internal discipline has positioned her as one of the leading contenders to steer the party through its recovery process.

Reaffirming her faith in the party’s potential, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful concluded her message with a call to unity and divine guidance:
“Patriots, join me. Let us commit to the struggle, for I know with unity and God on our side, and with the collective will of the Ghanaian people, we shall overcome.”

Her announcement is expected to reshape the dynamics within the NPP’s internal race for new national executives, setting the stage for what promises to be a pivotal contest as the party prepares to regroup for 2028.
