The Volta Regional Health Directorate of the Ghana Health Service has moved swiftly to clarify its position following reports linking one of its drivers to the alleged unlawful possession of narcotic drugs (wee), an incident that has sparked widespread public attention across the region.

In a press release dated 25 January, the Directorate confirmed that the individual at the centre of the case is Godsway Kwaku Dogbey, a driver with the Volta Regional Health Directorate.

According to the statement, the matter came to the attention of management after a viral news item circulated alleging that a Health Directorate driver had been arrested for narcotics-related offences.

Providing background to the incident, the Directorate explained that on Friday, 23rd January 2026, its Transport Unit received information that Dogbey had been arrested and detained at the Volta Regional Police Headquarters in Ho.

The arrest reportedly followed the interception of an official Directorate vehicle, with registration number GV 2460-14, which Dogbey was driving at the time.

The vehicle, according to police information relayed to the Directorate, was allegedly carrying items suspected to be narcotic substances, prompting Dogbey’s immediate arrest and detention.

Upon receiving confirmation of the development, management of the Volta Regional Health Directorate dispatched a team to the police headquarters to verify the circumstances surrounding the arrest.

The Directorate stated that police authorities confirmed the incident and indicated that the driver remains in custody, where he is currently assisting with ongoing investigations.

The Ghana Police Service has since taken full charge of the case as part of its mandate to investigate suspected narcotics-related offences.

Beyond the police investigation, the Volta Regional Health Directorate announced that it has initiated internal administrative processes to independently probe the matter.

Management is in the process of constituting a Committee of Enquiry to examine the circumstances under which an official health vehicle was allegedly used for unlawful activity.
