In a significant development, Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, convened a meeting with former Inspectors-General of Police at the National Police Headquarters in Accra on Wednesday April 2, 2025.
The gathering aimed to leverage the collective expertise and experience of former IGPs to enhance the Ghana Police Service’s administrative and operational effectiveness.
However, conspicuously absence was former IGP, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
This development is consistent with Akuffo Dampare’s past actions, as he had previously boycotted a farewell meeting with former President John Dramani Mahama after being dismissed from his position.
The backstory behind Dampare’s dismissal is complex.
During his tenure, Dampare had been at the helm of the Ghana Police Service, overseeing various initiatives and operations.
However, his dismissal by President Mahama marked a significant turning point in his career.
The strained relationship between Dampare and Yohuno, who served as his deputy during his tenure, has been well-documented.
When President Akufo-Addo appointed Tetteh Yohuno as Akuffo Dampare’s deputy, rumours of a rift between the two began to circulate.
The tension between them was palpable, with some sources suggesting that George Akuffo Dampare had taken issue with Tetteh Yohuno’s appointment.
Yesterday’s meeting, which Dampare boycotted, has only added fuel to the fire.

The gathering, which was attended by other former IGPs, focused on key issues such as personnel welfare, crime-fighting efforts, stakeholder engagement, and ongoing reforms within the Police Service.
The discussions also touched on broader security concerns affecting the country.
Despite George Akuffo Dampare’s absence, the meeting concluded with a commitment to regular engagements, ensuring the continued growth and effectiveness of the Ghana Police Service.
