A tragic road accident on the Nkawkaw-Accra Highway has left seven people dead and ten others injured, drawing fresh attention to the rising spate of fatal crashes along one of Ghana’s busiest highways.

The crash occurred on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Nkawanda No. 2, near Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region.

It involved a Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AW 4619-14 and a MAN Diesel cargo truck with registration number GN 114-21.

According to reports, the accident happened around 1:45 p.m.

The Nkawkaw Fire Station received a distress call and dispatched a rescue team to the scene.

Fire personnel arrived at 2:00 p.m. only to be met with what they described as a “devastating scene.”

Eyewitnesses said the impact was so severe that the Sprinter bus was completely mangled, trapping several passengers.

Seven occupants of the bus died instantly, including two young boys, a girl, and four women. The identities of the deceased are yet to be confirmed.

Meanwhile, ten other victims, including the driver and mate of the MAN Diesel truck, sustained various degrees of injuries.

Quick-thinking bystanders rushed the injured to the Holy Family Hospital and Kenop Hospital in Nkawkaw for treatment before emergency services arrived.

The bodies of the deceased were later retrieved and secured by the rescue team.

Police and fire personnel cordoned off the scene to allow for safe recovery operations and traffic management.

Preliminary information suggests the Sprinter bus bore the brunt of the impact, raising concerns about overloading, speeding, and driver fatigue — issues often cited in crashes involving long-distance passenger vehicles in Ghana.

The MAN Diesel truck, though partially damaged, did not record any fatalities among its occupants.

Authorities have since launched investigations into the cause of the accident.

The Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service is expected to release its findings in the coming days.
