Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale has disclosed that his success in the music industry was the result of years of personal discipline and self-education in Ghana rather than formal training abroad, as widely believed.
The award-winning musician made the revelation during an interview on Asempa FM on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, where he addressed longstanding claims that he travelled to Jamaica during his early career to learn dancehall music.
According to the artiste, his breakthrough came after spending several years quietly studying music production, songwriting, and the technical aspects of the music business while remaining in Ghana.
“I did not travel to Jamaica during my struggling days to learn dancehall,” he explained. “I spent about seven years in a room teaching myself music production and working hard until I finally broke through.”
Years Away From The Spotlight
Shatta Wale explained that his temporary disappearance from the mainstream music scene for nearly a decade was a deliberate move aimed at building a stronger foundation for his career. During that period, he focused on mastering beat production, developing songwriting techniques, and understanding the broader structure of the music industry.
The musician said the time away from public attention allowed him to sharpen his skills and prepare strategically for long-term success rather than short-term popularity.
“I took time to learn music production and carefully study the industry so I could understand how to move within it,” he said, adding that throughout the period he remained in Ghana rather than travelling abroad for training.
Debunking The Jamaica Narrative
Over the years, fans and critics alike have speculated that Shatta Wale must have travelled to Jamaica to refine his dancehall style due to the speed at which he developed his craft. However, the artiste dismissed those assumptions, explaining that his rapid improvement simply came from intense study and experimentation.
“The things I was learning and producing were coming so quickly that people assumed I must have travelled somewhere else to study,” he said.
Dancehall music, which originated in Jamaica, has long influenced Ghana’s music landscape, with several artists drawing inspiration from the Caribbean genre. Shatta Wale’s distinctive style and command of dancehall rhythms have often fuelled speculation about overseas training.
Internet As A Classroom
The musician further revealed that much of his knowledge was acquired through self-directed learning, with the internet serving as a key educational resource during his formative years.
“I stayed in a small room and taught myself how to produce beats. Whenever I did not understand something about music production, I went online to research it,” he explained.
According to him, the digital space became an essential tool that allowed him to study global music trends, production techniques, and industry strategies without leaving the country.
Persistence Behind The Success
Shatta Wale’s story offers insight into the discipline and determination that shaped his journey to becoming one of the most influential entertainers. His comments suggest that the success he enjoys today was built on years of quiet preparation rather than overnight fame.
