What began as a night of national celebration following Ghana’s victorious start to its FIFA World Cup campaign ended in tragedy after a promising young lawyer reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest and died while celebrating the Black Stars’ win over Panama.

The deceased, 26-year-old private legal practitioner Sara Araba Tettey, collapsed during jubilant scenes that followed the opening World Cup victory on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, leaving friends, colleagues and members of the legal fraternity in shock.

Ms. Tettey, who had only recently been called to the Ghana Bar, was widely regarded as one of the emerging young talents in the legal profession.

Her sudden death has cast a shadow over what was otherwise a joyous occasion for football fans across the country.

According to reports, the young lawyer was watching the highly anticipated World Cup fixture with friends at Standard Hostel, a private student hostel located at Bomso, near the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi.

Eyewitnesses said excitement erupted among supporters after the Black Stars secured victory against Panama in their opening match of the tournament.

Amid the celebrations, however, Tettey reportedly became unresponsive and suddenly collapsed.

Friends and other patrons immediately rushed to her aid before transporting her to the KNUST Hospital for emergency medical attention.

Sources indicate that medical personnel worked extensively to save her life, administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for approximately 45 minutes.

Despite the efforts of doctors and emergency responders, she was later pronounced dead.

Preliminary reports suggest she may have suffered a cardiac arrest, although medical authorities are expected to determine the exact cause of death following further examination.

Her body has since been deposited at the hospital mortuary pending autopsy and funeral arrangements.

Ms. Tettey was an alumnus of the Faculty of Law at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and was working with O & A Legal Consult at the time of her death.

Friends, former classmates and professional colleagues have described her as intelligent, hardworking, compassionate and highly ambitious.

Many have taken to social media to express their grief and pay tribute to a young lawyer whose professional journey was only beginning.
