Reece James Demands Stability As Chelsea’s Troubled Season Ends In FA Cup Heartbreak

By Nadia Ntiamoah

Chelsea captain Reece James has called for stability at the club following another disappointing end to a turbulent season that concluded with defeat in the 2026 FA Cup final.

The Blues suffered a narrow 1-0 loss to Manchester City at Wembley Stadium after Ghanaian forward Antoine Semenyo scored the decisive goal in the 71st minute to hand City yet another major trophy.

Chelsea’s latest setback capped a difficult 2025/26 campaign marked by managerial instability, inconsistent performances and growing frustration among supporters.

Semenyo Delivers Cup Glory For Manchester City

The match remained tightly contested until Semenyo produced the breakthrough that ultimately separated the two sides.

The Ghana international, who completed a high-profile move from AFC Bournemouth to Manchester City in January 2026, continued his remarkable rise by securing both the FA Cup and Carabao Cup titles within months of arriving at the Etihad Stadium.

His goal denied Chelsea a chance to salvage silverware from an otherwise disappointing season and further strengthened City’s domestic dominance under manager Pep Guardiola.

Chelsea Season Derailed By Instability

Chelsea’s campaign was heavily disrupted by constant changes in the technical area.

The London club dismissed both Enzo Maresca and Liam Rosenior during the season as results deteriorated and pressure mounted at Stamford Bridge.

Interim coach Calum McFarlane was unable to reverse the decline, with the FA Cup final defeat extending Chelsea’s poor run of form in recent weeks.

Speaking after the match, Reece James admitted the atmosphere around the club had become increasingly difficult following a series of disappointing results.

“It’s disappointing obviously, to lose. No one is happy when you lose,” James told TNT Sports.

“We have lost a fair few games recently — it has been difficult. Every time we step out onto the pitch the target is to win.”

James Identifies Chelsea’s Biggest Problem

The England defender believes Chelsea’s struggles stem largely from a lack of continuity and long-term direction at the club.

When asked what the club needs moving forward, James pointed directly to the need for stability both on and off the pitch.

“I think the key thing is stability,” he stressed.

His comments are likely to resonate with supporters who have watched Chelsea undergo repeated managerial changes and squad restructuring since the departure of former owner Roman Abramovich years earlier.

Pressure Builds Ahead Of New Era

Chelsea are now expected to enter another rebuilding phase ahead of the 2026/27 season, with reports linking former Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso to the managerial role.

The club’s hierarchy faces increasing pressure to restore consistency and competitiveness after another campaign without major success.

For Manchester City, however, the victory further highlighted the gulf between the two clubs this season, with Guardiola’s side once again demonstrating their ability to deliver trophies during decisive moments.

Meanwhile, Semenyo’s continued success has provided another major boost for Ghanaian football ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars will hope several of their top players arrive in peak form.
