Laura Brand, wife of British comedian and media personality Russell Brand, has defended her husband during his ongoing rape and sexual assault trial in London, describing him as a caring, kind man and a wonderful father to their three children.
Giving evidence at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday, the 39-year-old told the jury that Brand treated her with love and understanding, insisting that he respected her boundaries, including when she did not want to engage in sexual activity.
Asked by the defence barrister whether her husband respected her decision when she did not want to have sex, Laura responded emphatically: “Yes, absolutely.”
She further described their marriage as one built on honesty and emotional understanding, telling the court that Brand made her feel recognised and appreciated.
“The way he treats me is to know me. I feel very seen by him,” she said, adding that she loved him very much.
Wife Recounts Their Relationship History
Laura, who is the daughter of former professional golfer Bernard Gallacher and sister of television presenter Kirsty Gallacher, told the court that she first met Brand at the Edinburgh Festival in 2006.
She recalled approaching him after one of his performances to introduce herself as Kirsty’s sister and compliment his show. According to her testimony, Brand contacted her the following day, and they subsequently began a relationship.
She disclosed that although they became intimate when they first met, she did not want to have sexual intercourse at the time.
Laura also told the court that she was aware of Brand’s reputation for having relationships with multiple women. She said she later discovered that he had been sexually involved with other women while they were dating.
“I wasn’t interested in having a relationship with him if he was sleeping with other people,” she told the jury.
She explained that although they had expressed love for each other, maintaining a monogamous relationship had proved difficult for Brand.
The couple eventually went their separate ways, but remained friends. Laura said she was also aware of Brand’s relationships and publicised romantic life during his marriage to American singer Katy Perry, which lasted from 2010 to 2012.
She disclosed that they rekindled their relationship in 2015 before marrying in 2017.
Describing their marriage, she maintained that openness and honesty remained central to their relationship.
“We have a very honest, frank, and clear relationship and marriage,” she said, describing honesty as one of the most important aspects of their union.
Two Former Girlfriends Give Evidence
The court also heard statements from two women who previously had relationships with Brand.
Elia Alvarez Diaz, who said she lived with the entertainer for approximately a year between 1998 and 1999, described him as gentle, loving and exciting to be around.
She also characterised him as highly persuasive and complex, but maintained that he accepted her decision whenever she said no.
According to her statement, their relationship eventually ended because Brand repeatedly cheated on her.
