In a devastating turn of events, Constable Kwabena Dogbe, a police officer, lost his life while participating in an anti-galamsey operation in the River Offin.
The incident occurred on Wednesday morning, as the Central North Regional Police Command launched a crackdown on illegal mining activities in the region.
According to reports, Constable Dogbe and his team arrived at the illegal mining site, where they encountered a group of miners.
As the officers approached, the galamseyers abandoned their equipment and fled across the river.
Determined to seize and destroy the illegal mining tools, Constable Dogbe entered the river to pursue the fleeing suspects.
Tragically, he slipped and was swept away by the fast-moving current.
A frantic search lasting over four hours was conducted, and officers eventually recovered Constable Dogbe’s lifeless body from the river.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the police service and the Assin Asaman community, highlighting the dangers faced by law enforcement in the fight against illegal mining.
The Central North Regional Police Command has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident and assured the public of its continued resolve to clamp down on illegal mining.
Galamsey, a menace that has plagued Ghana’s environment for years, has been a major concern for the government.
