South Africa have written a new chapter in their football history after defeating South Korea 1-0 to qualify for the Round of 32 of the FIFA World Cup 2026 for the first time ever.
Bafana Bafana produced a resilient and disciplined display in their final Group A fixture on Thursday morning to secure the victory they desperately needed, ending years of frustration on the global stage and booking a place in the knockout rounds of football’s biggest tournament.
The historic qualification came after South Africa found themselves in a difficult position heading into their final group match. Defeat to hosts Mexico in their opening fixture and a draw against Czechia had left Bafana Bafana with just one point from two games, meaning only a victory over South Korea would be enough to keep their World Cup campaign alive.
With qualification hanging in the balance, both sides approached the contest knowing that a single mistake could end their hopes of progressing.
South Korea made the brighter start and almost found an early breakthrough inside the opening three minutes. Defender Kim Min-jae rose highest to meet a dangerous cross inside the penalty area, but his powerful header was bravely blocked by the South African defence before it could trouble the goalkeeper.
The Asian side continued to dominate the early exchanges and came close again five minutes later when Kang-In Lee found space inside the South African box.
However, the midfielder failed to hit the target after connecting with another dangerous delivery, allowing Bafana Bafana to survive another scare.
After weathering the early pressure, South Africa gradually settled into the game and began creating opportunities of their own.
Their best chance of the opening half fell to striker Evidence Makgopa midway through the first period. The forward reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the penalty area and unleashed a fierce strike towards goal, but South Korean goalkeeper Kim Seung-Gyu produced an outstanding reflex save to keep the scores level.
The missed opportunity did little to dampen South Africa’s confidence as Hugo Broos’ men returned after halftime with renewed determination.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 63rd minute following one of Bafana Bafana’s best attacking moves of the match.
Tshepang Moremi played a crucial role by driving forward before delivering a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Thapelo Maseko. Showing remarkable composure under pressure, Maseko calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner to send the South African supporters into celebration.
The goal proved to be the defining moment of the contest. With their World Cup hopes slipping away, South Korea threw everything forward in search of an equaliser during the closing stages.
Wave after wave of attacks tested South Africa’s resolve, but Bafana Bafana’s defence stood firm. The backline remained organised and disciplined, frustrating the Asian side and refusing to allow any clear route back into the match.
Their determination was rewarded when the final whistle confirmed a famous 1-0 victory and one of the greatest achievements in South African football history.
The result, combined with Mexico’s victory over Czechia in the other Group A fixture, ensured South Africa finished second in the standings behind the tournament hosts.
Mexico topped the group, while Bafana Bafana claimed the second automatic qualification place to advance to the Round of 32.
