Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the 2024 presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former Vice President of Ghana, has resumed the party’s nationwide “Thank You Tour,” beginning with key stops across the Eastern Region.
The tour, which had covered 13 regions before a temporary suspension, resumed on Saturday, May 24, 2025, with a renewed focus on party unity and grassroots engagement.
Background: The 2024 Elections and the NPP’s Response
The “Thank You Tour” is part of the NPP’s broader post-election initiative aimed at reconnecting with its grassroots base and expressing gratitude to party members and supporters nationwide.
The tour began shortly after the December 2024 general elections, in which Dr. Bawumia led the NPP in a fiercely contested race against the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) John Dramani Mahama, who ultimately emerged victorious.
Despite the electoral outcome, the NPP has remained steadfast in acknowledging the efforts of its support base.
Party leadership, including Dr. Bawumia, had initially visited 13 out of the country’s 16 regions, engaging traditional leaders, constituency executives, and grassroots organizers.
These interactions have served as both a form of political healing and an opportunity to assess the party’s strengths and shortcomings moving forward.
Brief Suspension for International Engagements
The tour was momentarily paused in April 2025 to allow Dr. Bawumia and senior NPP officials to attend international engagements, including the International Democratic Union (IDU) Conference in Belgium.
The IDU, a global alliance of center-right political parties, offered Bawumia and his team a platform to engage with global political stakeholders and reinforce the NPP’s presence on the international stage.
Resumption in the Eastern Region
With the tour now back on track, the Eastern Region is the first stop in this renewed phase.
Over the weekend, Dr. Bawumia held strategic meetings with party stakeholders and grassroots leaders in Nkawkaw, Bunsu, and Koforidua.
The visit will culminated in a final engagement in Asamankese on Sunday, May 25, 2025.
According to party sources, the Eastern Region leg of the tour is seen as critical, given the region’s mixed electoral outcomes in 2024.
It is viewed as a bellwether for assessing the NPP’s future electoral viability and serves as an opportunity to reenergize the base ahead of future contests, including the 2028 elections.
Next Stop: Greater Accra Region
Following the Eastern Region, the tour will move to the Greater Accra Region on Monday, May 27 and Tuesday, May 28.
The capital region, known for its political volatility and diversity, is expected to host a series of high-profile engagements.
These include interactions with regional executives, youth wings, and business communities aligned with the party.
Message of Gratitude and Unity
Throughout the tour, Dr. Bawumia has consistently emphasized gratitude and party unity.
In his addresses, he has thanked Ghanaians for their continued faith in the democratic process and the NPP, reiterating that the party remains committed to Ghana’s development agenda regardless of being in opposition.
“This tour is not just about saying thank you. It is about listening, learning, and reaffirming our bond with every NPP supporter across the country,” Dr. Bawumia said during a recent interaction in the Central Region prior to the pause.
