Carlos Queiroz has officially stepped down as head coach of the Black Stars following Ghana’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, ending a brief but eventful four-month tenure that saw him guide the four-time African champions back to the knockout stages of football’s biggest tournament.
The veteran Portuguese tactician confirmed his departure in an emotional farewell message shortly after Ghana’s World Cup journey came to an end with a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32.
His resignation brings the curtain down on a short-term appointment that began in April 2026 when the Ghana Football Association turned to the experienced coach to revive the fortunes of the senior national team ahead of the global showpiece.
Queiroz was handed a contract that was due to expire in August, with an extension clause linked to performance at the World Cup. Under the agreement, the contract would have been automatically renewed if Ghana had reached the quarter-finals.
However, the Black Stars’ defeat to Colombia meant the conditions for the extension were not triggered, bringing his spell in charge to an end.
Despite the disappointment of exiting in the first knockout round, Queiroz believes his team restored the Black Stars’ reputation on the international stage after a difficult period for Ghanaian football.
In his farewell message, the 73-year-old reflected on his time with the national team, expressing gratitude to everyone who supported him during his tenure.
“Football, like life, teaches us one timeless lesson: you either win or you learn,” Queiroz wrote.
“I leave this journey with pride in what we achieved, but also with the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always wanted more.”
He also paid tribute to Ghanaian supporters, acknowledging that although the team fell short of its ultimate objective, the players had represented the country with commitment and dignity.
“To the fans, we cannot claim complete sporting satisfaction, but we can proudly say that we honoured the colours of Ghana and restored respect and credibility to the Black Stars on football’s greatest stage,” he stated.
