Fresh tensions have erupted within the family of Ghana’s late highlife icon Daddy Lumba following reports that Victor Kofi Owusu Boahen, popularly known as Abusuapanyin Tupac, has been removed from his position as family head.
The development comes after months of internal family disputes surrounding funeral arrangements, the administration of the musician’s estate, and disagreements among relatives over key decisions taken after the artiste’s death.
Removal Follows Escalating Family Tensions
According to reports that surfaced on March 11, 2026, members of the extended family decided to remove Owusu from the role of Abusuapanyin, citing concerns over his leadership and actions during the funeral and post-burial period of the celebrated musician.
Some relatives reportedly accused him of bringing disgrace to the family and mishandling sensitive matters linked to the late musician’s funeral and estate.
The decision marks a dramatic turn in a dispute that has dominated public discussion since the death of Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kwadwo Fosu.
Financial Allegations Spark Police Complaint
The latest tensions intensified after allegations of financial impropriety emerged.
A family member, Ernestina Fosuh, is reported to have lodged a complaint at the Kumasi Central Police Station over claims that the family head made unauthorised withdrawals from funds raised for the musician’s funeral.
The allegation has further deepened mistrust among family members and contributed to calls for his removal from the leadership position.
Long-Running Legal And Family Disputes
The family divisions date back to the period following Daddy Lumba’s death on July 26, 2025, at Bank Hospital in Accra. Since then, disagreements have emerged among relatives, spouses, and associates regarding funeral rites, burial decisions, and the administration of the late musician’s estate.
One of the central disputes involved Akosua Serwaa Fosuh, who has been involved in legal battles concerning spousal recognition and estate administration.
These disputes have played out both in courtrooms and in the public sphere, with competing factions within the family accusing each other of attempting to control the legacy and assets of the late highlife legend.
Abusuapanyin Previously Rejected Removal Attempts
Before the reported decision to remove him, Victor Kofi Owusu had publicly resisted calls for his resignation. He insisted that under Ashanti customary law, only Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, had the authority to remove him as family head.
He had dismissed critics within the family and challenged their legitimacy to demand his removal.
GaDangme Chief Priest Intervenes
The leadership controversy coincides with a separate development involving traditional authorities in Accra. The Office of the Gborbu Wulomo Nuumo Borketey Laweh Tsuru XXXIII has formally summoned Owusu to appear before the Nungua Palace.
The summons relates to public concerns over claims that Daddy Lumba may have been buried at his private residence in East Legon rather than at a publicly known burial site.
The GaDangme spiritual leader requested that the family head appear before him on March 13, 2026, to clarify the burial arrangements and address sentiments raised by sections of the GaDangme community.
Burial Controversy Continues
The summons underscores the broader national debate surrounding the burial of Daddy Lumba, whose passing triggered widespread mourning across Ghana and among diaspora communities.
While the musician was given a grand funeral in Kumasi in December 2025, disputes about the exact location of his burial and the management of his estate have continued to generate legal battles, family tensions, and traditional interventions.
Legacy Overshadowed By Disputes
Daddy Lumba remains one of the most influential musicians, credited with shaping modern highlife music and producing decades of hit songs that resonated across generations.
However, months after his death, the continuing disputes over his funeral funds, family leadership, burial arrangements, and estate management have increasingly overshadowed discussions about his extraordinary musical legacy.
