Dogfight Gone Berserk

The ongoing dogfight between the Attorney General Dominic Ayine and A-Plus both of them legislators has thrown out many issues all of them of national significance.

The latter’s labelling of the former as corrupt, thief among other defamatory descriptions have doubtlessly stained the image of the Chief Legal Officer of the government.

It was a gutter engagement which saw the AG bruised beyond redemption. The AG served notice that he was not afraid of jumping into the gutter with the musician turned politician.

We wonder whether in this stained state the AG has any moral authority to prosecute persons suspected to have engaged in corrupt activities, giving the revelations of him cutting deals.

And to think that this is the gentleman who gave suspected corrupt government appointees of the Mahama previous term a bill of clean health and so discontinued cases against them casts doubts about his action.

When the issue of bribe-giving allegation by the President’s nominees was made public by someone, there was such a fuss on the public space prompting the Speaker to announce an action against the originator of the allegation.

Although the matter died eventually A-Plus’ accusation gives us cause to demand a revisit and a probe.

Shouldn’t the Office of the Special Prosecutor swing into action at this stage? The explanation by the AG that monies were given to MPs and that he did same in his rebuttal of A-Plus’ attack poses integrity questions which should not be swept under the carpet.

Here is a regime which during the campaign season promised to deal with corruption head-on when voted into power yet being faced with the revelations emanating from the ongoing dogfight between two important politicians in the country it has not spoken a word. Of course it is a test case for the President’s commitment to fighting corruption unless this one too is going to go the way of galamsey….. ignore it and let it take its own course.

The AG should give us a break from his incessant press conferences announcing cases against former government officials when his closet is filled with integrity challenges.

We notice also that in one of his blows to A-Plus the AG challenged him to narrate what he knows about the National Service case.

A-Plus has not responded and the AG has also not disclosed the secret. Both parties have secrets about each other confidentialities which are anything but in the interest of the nation.

It is also clear that the AG is hiding information which is important for the nation’s fight against graft. Who is the businessman who is alleged to have given A-Plus campaign money and who appears to be asking him to discontinue the attacks on the AG?

Is that how low this country has gone under the administration of President John Mahama?
