EOCO Frees Kofi Akpaloo After Days of Detention

Percival Kofi Akpaloo, leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), has regained his freedom after several days in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), following legal intervention by his lawyers on Thursday evening.

Kofi Akpaloo was initially arrested at his Kumasi residence on September 3, 2025, as part of an investigation into alleged financial crimes, including money laundering, fraud, dissipation of public funds, and causing financial loss to the state.

The case drew widespread attention due to Akpaloo’s high-profile political standing and the stringent bail conditions imposed by EOCO.

Reports indicated that EOCO had demanded a bail bond of GH¢10 million alongside two sureties, a condition Kofi Akpaloo struggled to meet. Legal sources confirmed that his lawyers, led by Enoch Afoakwah, engaged directly with EOCO authorities, presenting arguments and documentation that ultimately facilitated his release.

While earlier rumors suggested a reduction of the bail amount from GH¢10 million to GH¢3.5 million, LPG officials clarified that the bail remained at GH¢10 million with two sureties, underscoring the pivotal role of the legal team in navigating the complex bail process.

Kofi Akpaloo’s detention sparked national debate, with supporters accusing the government of attempting to silence a persistent opposition figure, while critics maintained that the legal process demonstrates accountability for all public figures, irrespective of political affiliation.

George Boateng, a former NDC presidential aspirant, reportedly intervened on Akpaloo’s behalf by appealing to the President to consider his deteriorating health, highlighting the multi-faceted support efforts surrounding the politician.

Having been released, Akpaloo is expected to cooperate with ongoing EOCO investigations while also resuming his political engagements.

The Liberal Party of Ghana hailed the release as a “victory for justice and due process,” emphasizing the importance of legal representation in safeguarding citizens’ rights, even amid politically sensitive investigations.
