The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, carried out a sweeping enforcement action that led to the closure of 16 food service establishments in the Greater Accra Region for operating without valid hygiene permits.
The move underscores the Authority’s continued efforts to safeguard public health and ensure compliance with food safety regulations.
Among the affected businesses were well-known establishments including The Cheesecake House, Dolce Frizzante, Onda, and Alora Beach Resort, which were all found to be in violation of the Food Hygiene Permit requirements.
The closures follow a two-week public notice issued by the FDA, warning that all food service operators without proper permits would be shut down from February 1, 2026.
The FDA, through an official statement on its social media platforms, emphasized that the directive applies broadly across the food service sector.
This includes restaurants, snack bars, chop bars, hotels, lounges, bakeries, event catering services, mobile food vans, and canteens in schools, hospitals, and offices.
The Authority reiterated that compliance with approved hygiene standards is non-negotiable and that operators who fail to meet these standards pose significant health risks to the public.
The Authority has urged all operators to prioritize hygiene and to acquire the requisite permits before resuming business operations.
