A former Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Wa Municipal Assembly, Dr. Issahaku Moomin Tahiru, has officially declared his intention to contest for the position of National Treasurer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when nominations are opened ahead of the party’s next national executive elections.
Dr. Tahiru, a chartered accountant with extensive experience in public financial management, administration and party organization, believes his professional background and long-standing service to the NPP position him to contribute significantly to the financial management and growth of the party at the national level.
His announcement has already generated interest among sections of the party, particularly within professional and grassroots networks, where supporters have welcomed his decision to seek one of the NPP’s key national executive positions.
A seasoned public administrator, Dr. Tahiru served as Municipal Chief Executive for the Wa Municipal Assembly for eight years, during which he oversaw several development initiatives and administrative reforms within the municipality.
His tenure at the Assembly provided him with practical experience in public sector financial management, governance, and resource mobilization.
Beyond local government administration, Dr. Tahiru has also played an active role in partisan politics. He previously contested parliamentary elections on the ticket of the NPP as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Wa Central Constituency in both the 2012 and 2016 general elections.
His political journey within the NPP has been complemented by a distinguished professional career spanning several public institutions.
Before entering active local governance, he worked with the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department and also served with the Ghana Revenue Authority, where he gained valuable experience in public finance, taxation, and fiscal administration.
Dr. Tahiru further strengthened his credentials through his work with the Ghana Health Service, where he served as Head of Finance in various health facilities across the country, including postings in the Ashanti Region.
His responsibilities involved financial planning, budgeting, accounting, and ensuring compliance with public financial management regulations.
Currently, he operates as an international business agent, facilitating financial transactions and business engagements for organizations and private clients. His work in the private sector has exposed him to international business practices, investment strategies, and corporate financial management.
Supporters of his candidature argue that his blend of public sector experience, political involvement and private sector exposure makes him uniquely qualified for the position of National Treasurer.
According to party members backing his bid, Dr. Tahiru possesses a deep understanding of Ghana’s Public Financial Management Act, financial regulations and modern accounting practices, qualities they believe are essential for managing the finances of a major political party.
His experience in fundraising, investment management, business networking and strategic financial planning is also being highlighted as an asset that could help strengthen the NPP’s financial base and improve resource mobilization efforts ahead of future elections.
