In what many in Ghana’s entertainment industry consider a long-overdue recognition, comedian Foster Romanus’ “Romanus Incomplete VI” was adjudged the Best Comedy Event of 2024 at this year’s Ghana Comedy Awards, cementing the show’s position as a pillar of Ghanaian comedic culture.
The prestigious award, announced over the weekend, comes on the heels of an exceptional sixth edition of the comedy showcase held at the National Theatre in Accra.
The event, which has evolved over the years into a cherished annual fixture, drew massive crowds, with fans packing the auditorium to capacity and spilling over into the theatre’s lobby.
Organisers and security officials were reportedly overwhelmed by the turnout, prompting emergency measures, including allowing some patrons onto the stage area just to accommodate the sheer number of comedy lovers eager for the experience.
Launched several years ago, Romanus Incomplete has grown from a one-man comic performance into a full-fledged entertainment experience, blending stand-up comedy, live music, theatrical elements, and brand activations.
Each edition serves not just as a show but as a year-end celebration that brings together diverse audiences across generations.
The sixth installment, staged in late 2024, was particularly notable for its creative depth, production quality, and audience engagement.
It featured a lineup of top-tier acts and surprise appearances, culminating in a performance that industry observers say raised the bar for live comedy in Ghana.
In reaction to the award, Team Romanus said the accolade serves as motivation to aim even higher.
“This plaque is a challenge to outdo ourselves. We’re already working to make the next edition even more spectacular,” they said in a statement, adding that the team is eyeing international expansion to put Ghanaian comedy on the global map.
For Foster Romanus, the recognition is both a personal milestone and a testament to the power of consistency and creativity in a market where comedy often plays second fiddle to music and film. Industry stakeholders are now calling for greater investment in live comedy, citing the success of Romanus Incomplete as proof of its commercial and cultural potential.
