GAF Dismiss Reports Of Brigadier General Michael Opoku’s Arrest

The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has debunked widespread media reports suggesting that Brigadier General Michael Opoku, former General Officer Commanding the Central Command in Kumasi has been arrested by security operatives for unlawful possession of ammunition.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, by the Department of Public Relations at Burma Camp, the military hierarchy described the reports as false and misleading.

The Armed Forces stressed that Brigadier General Opoku “remains an active member of the Ghana Armed Forces and is not under arrest for any crime committed.”

According to the release, extensive checks conducted by the GAF with various security and investigative agencies, including the National Investigation Authority, revealed no record of the senior officer’s alleged arrest.

The statement further clarified that “as of date, all enquiries from various Security Agencies and National Investigation Authorities have not corroborated the said publication of arrest.”

The military assured the public that it does not shield its officers from accountability.

It emphasized that should any personnel of the Armed Forces be implicated in criminal activity, they would face the same legal procedures as any ordinary citizen.

“Any military personnel involved in any crime of any nature would be subjected to the same procedure as any other citizen of the country,” the statement affirmed.

The GAF expressed concern about the spread of what it called misinformation and disinformation, urging the public to disregard the circulating reports.

It cautioned against the dangers of false publications, which not only tarnish reputations but also undermine public trust in the Armed Forces.
