Ghana’s Black Satellites have booked a place in the quarterfinals of the 2025 CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations even before playing their final Group C match against the Central African Republic (C.A.R), a testament to the team’s strong start to the tournament underway in Egypt.
With four points already secured from a 1-1 draw with DR Congo and a crucial 1-0 win over defending champions Senegal, the Satellites are guaranteed a top-two finish in the group regardless of the outcome of today’s match against C.A.R. at 15:00 GMT.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) applies a head-to-head rule over goal difference when ranking teams level on points.
This works in Ghana’s favour, as the Black Satellites hold the advantage over Senegal, meaning even a Senegal win against DR Congo in their simultaneous fixture will not displace Ghana from a qualifying spot.
Ghana’s path to the quarterfinals has not been without challenges. Lead striker Jerry Afriyie, who played a pivotal role in the opening fixtures, has been recalled by his Spanish club, CD Lugo, ahead of the final group game.
This leaves a gap in Ghana’s attacking force, but head coach Desmond Ofei remains focused on finishing strong.
Speaking ahead of the C.A.R clash, Coach Ofei cautioned against any sense of complacency among his players.
“We may have qualified, but we cannot afford to be complacent. Every match in a tournament like this shapes momentum and confidence,” he said.
“C.A.R. is a team with quality, and we need to approach the game with the same intensity we showed against Senegal.”
Despite Afriyie’s absence, Ghana’s performance thus far has been inspired by strong midfield displays and defensive discipline, led by standout players like Abdul Aziz Issah, who has drawn praise for his energy and control in the middle of the park.
The Black Satellites are chasing their fourth U-20 AFCON title, having last lifted the trophy in 2009—a campaign that also saw Ghana win the FIFA U-20 World Cup later that year.
Expectations remain high as the team continues its journey in Egypt, with the quarterfinal stage now secured and the dream of continental glory still alive.
Ghana’s match against the Central African Republic will still be critical in determining who tops Group C, a position that could influence the level of opposition in the knockout stage.
