Ghana’s quest for a medal in the men’s 200 metres at the 2026 Commonwealth Games received a significant boost after Joseph Paul Amoah, James Dadzie and Mustapha Bokpin all secured places in the semi-finals with impressive performances at Scotstoun Stadium.
The trio produced commanding displays in their respective heats on Wednesday, July 29, ensuring Team Ghana will have three representatives battling for places in the final of one of athletics’ most competitive sprint events.
Joseph Paul Amoah led the charge by winning Heat One in a time of 20.36 seconds to book automatic qualification for the next round. The experienced sprinter looked comfortable throughout the race, underlining his credentials as one of Ghana’s strongest medal contenders.
James Dadzie also progressed in impressive fashion after crossing the finish line first in Heat Nine in 20.65 seconds.
The performance adds to what has already been an outstanding season for the Ghanaian sprinter, who earlier this year recorded a world-leading time of 19.79 seconds to announce himself among the world’s elite.
Mustapha Bokpin completed a clean sweep for Ghana by also securing automatic qualification with another strong performance, ensuring all three Ghanaian athletes advanced to the semi-finals.
The qualification of the trio strengthens the hopes of ending the Games with a podium finish in the men’s 200 metres, with all three athletes set to compete for places in the final.
Amoah brings considerable international experience into the next round. The two-time Olympian has a personal best of 20.08 seconds and previously reached the men’s 200 metres semi-finals at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
