GJA Opens Nominations For 2025 Executive Elections

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has officially opened nominations for its 2025 national and regional executive elections, signaling the beginning of a critical democratic process within the country’s foremost journalism body.

The Elections Committee made the announcement on Friday, May 16, 2025, setting a clear roadmap for the election of new leadership at both national and regional levels.

This year’s electoral process is scheduled to culminate in voting on Monday, June 30, 2025, with the Electoral Commission of Ghana providing technical support and oversight to ensure transparency and credibility.

Key Leadership Positions Open for Contest

At the national level, members will contest six key positions:

President

Vice President

General Secretary

Organising Secretary

Treasurer

Public Affairs Officer

At the regional level, available positions include:

Chairperson

Vice Chairperson

Secretary

Treasurer

Nomination Fees

Nominations are open until Friday, May 30, 2025, and interested candidates are required to complete and submit nomination forms, which will be made available via a secure digital link after payment of the prescribed fees.

Nomination fees are as follows:

National Level: GHC 5,000 for President; GHC 3,000 for all other positions

Regional Level: GHC 1,500 for Chairperson; GHC 1,000 for all other positions

Payments are to be made into the GJA account at the National Investment Bank Limited, Osu Branch.

All nominations must be submitted with a recent passport-size photo on a red background.

Vetting, Balloting, and Campaign Calendar

Vetting of candidates is scheduled from Tuesday, June 3 to Thursday, June 5, 2025.

National candidates will be vetted in person at the Ghana International Press Centre in Accra, while regional candidates will undergo virtual vetting.

Results of the vetting will be released on Friday, June 6, 2025.

The balloting for positions will take place on Monday, June 9, 2025, after which the official campaign period will begin and run until Saturday, June 28, 2025.

In the lead-up to the elections, the Elections Committee will also release the official voter register by May 30, 2025, and issue the final election calendar on Monday, May 19, 2025.

GJA’s Ongoing Democratic Tradition

This election is part of GJA’s longstanding tradition of internal democracy and leadership renewal.

The Association plays a critical role in safeguarding press freedom and upholding ethical journalism in Ghana. As such, the leadership it elects has a significant impact on the national media landscape.

The Elections Committee, chaired by Peter Martey Agbeko, with Kwaku Owusu-Peprah as Secretary and Beatrice Asamani Savage as Member, has assured members and stakeholders of a transparent and credible electoral process.
