President John Dramani Mahama has confirmed that Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang is set to return to Ghana and resume her official responsibilities following a period of medical leave.
The announcement was made during a stop in Dodowa as part of the president’s ongoing national “Thank You Tour.”
Addressing a jubilant crowd, President Mahama shared an update on the health of the Vice President.
“Bringing you greetings from Her Excellency the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang,” he stated.
“I’m happy to say I spoke to her yesterday morning, and she’ll be back in the country before the end of next week. By God’s grace, she’s fully recovered and will return to her duties.”
This marks the first public statement from the presidency confirming the timeline for Prof Opoku-Agyemang’s return to active service, following her absence from the public eye for several weeks.
Recently, the president accompanied by the Finance Minister Ato Forson visited her in London where she had undergone treatment.
The Vice President was initially reported to have taken ill on Friday, March 28, 2025, and was admitted to the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) for evaluation.
Following initial treatment and monitoring, medical experts at the UGMC allegedly recommended that she seek further care abroad as a precaution to ensure complete recovery.
In line with that advice, Prof Opoku-Agyemang officially commenced a three-week medical leave beginning April 7, 2025.
Although the presidency maintained discretion about the details of her condition and treatment location, sources close to the Office of the Vice President had earlier hinted at a non-life-threatening ailment that required specialized attention.
Her extended absence had stirred speculation and concern, particularly within political and media circles, prompting calls for official communication about her status.
President Mahama’s remarks in Dodowa appear to bring closure to the uncertainty, reaffirming that the Vice President is in good health and ready to return to her constitutional duties.
Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, an educationist and former Minister of Education, made history in 2024 as the first female to assume the office of Vice President in Ghana.
Her role in the Mahama administration has been widely seen as both symbolic and substantial, especially in shaping policy discussions around education, gender, and youth empowerment.
With her return expected before the end of next week, government officials and political observers alike anticipate a renewed vigor in the presidency’s agenda, as the administration gears up for a busy second half of 2025.
