Kofi Akpaloo Sweats In EOCO Custody Over Bail Conditions

BY Nadia Ntiamoah

Leader of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Percival Kofi Akpaloo, remains in custody at the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) nearly a week after his arrest, unable to meet the stringent bail conditions imposed by investigators.

Akpaloo was arrested at his Kumasi residence on September 3, 2025, under circumstances that were initially unclear.

Days later, the Deputy Attorney General, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, confirmed that the politician was being investigated for alleged financial crimes, including fraud, money laundering, dissipation of public funds, and causing financial loss to the state.

In a social media post, Dr. Srem-Sai disclosed that Akpaloo had been granted bail with conditions set at GH¢10 million and two sureties to be justified.

However, the opposition figure has been unable to fulfil these requirements, leaving him in EOCO custody.

A glimmer of relief came when George Boateng, a former National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential aspirant, intervened on Akpaloo’s behalf, leading to a downward review of the bail bond from GH¢10 million to GH¢3.5 million.

Despite the reduction, the LPG leader has still been unable to meet the terms, deepening concerns about his prolonged detention.

Akpaloo’s arrest and subsequent detention mark a dramatic turn in the career of a politician who has remained a consistent figure in the political landscape for over a decade.

Since 2012, he has contested in elections under the LPG banner, though without success in either parliamentary or presidential races.

Known for his outspoken nature and tenacity, Kofi Akpaloo has often positioned himself as a voice of alternative governance.

His continued stay in custody has sparked heated political debate.

While some of his supporters allege a deliberate attempt to silence him, others argue that the case represents a necessary test of the justice system and its ability to hold public figures accountable, regardless of their political background.

However, George Boateng has appealed directly to President John Mahama, urging him to consider Akpaloo’s “deteriorating health condition” and step in to ensure his release from detention.

For now, the fate of the LPG leader rests on his ability—or inability—to raise the required bail amount and secure his freedom.

Until then, the man once described as one of the most persistent political hopefuls will continue to spend his days behind EOCO bars, awaiting the outcome of investigations that could redefine his political future.
