78 Radio Stations Granted Right To Broadcast Ghana Premier League

BY Issah Olegor

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced that an unprecedented 78 radio stations across the country have secured accreditation to broadcast live commentary of the 2025/26 Ghana Premier League (GPL) season.

This marks the widest media reach in the league’s history and is seen as a major step towards deepening the popularity of the top-flight competition.

According to the GFA, the arrangement, made possible through its media partner GhSportsLive, will allow millions of football lovers to enjoy uninterrupted match-day coverage regardless of where they are located.

The move is part of a broader agenda by the Association to make the league more accessible and reconnect fans with local football, which in recent years has suffered dwindling stadium attendances and growing competition from European leagues.

A Milestone For Domestic Football

Historically, the local league has struggled with visibility beyond urban centres, with fans in rural communities relying largely on unofficial commentary from smaller stations.

The GFA’s latest move is therefore considered a breakthrough, ensuring that live commentary is accessible nationwide and that clubs benefit from increased exposure.

Full Regional Coverage

The 78 accredited stations cut across all 16 regions, including heavyweights such as Joy FM, Adom FM, Asempa FM, Peace FM, and Luv FM, as well as regional players like Skyy Power FM in Takoradi, Kastle FM in Cape Coast, and A1 Radio in Bolgatanga.

Greater Accra has 16 stations; Ashanti Region with 17 stations, underscoring their central roles in the football.

The Western Region secured 15 stations, while the Bono & Ahafo Regions had 9.

Smaller regions such as the Upper West will be represented by GBC Radio Upper West Wa.

This nationwide coverage means that for the first time in many years, fans from urban Accra to remote parts of the Northern, Upper East, and Upper West regions will have equal access to GPL matches.

Warning to Unlicensed Broadcasters

The GFA has also issued a stern warning to unaccredited stations attempting to rebroadcast commentary illegally.

According to the Association, such acts will be treated as copyright infringement and offenders risk prosecution, heavy fines, or the revocation of their broadcasting licenses.

This warning follows previous seasons when unauthorized rebroadcasts undermined official partnerships and deprived the league of much-needed revenue.

Rebuilding The League’s Image

The decision comes at a time when the GPL is making efforts to rebrand and attract greater corporate sponsorship.

Over the years, the league’s image has suffered due to poor organization, lack of media coverage, and allegations of corruption, most notably after the 2018 Anas exposé which forced a major restructuring of Ghana football.

By widening media access, the GFA hopes to reignite enthusiasm for local football, boost advertising interest, and ensure that clubs benefit from improved exposure.

Analysts believe that this renewed visibility could help bridge the gap between the Ghana Premier League and foreign leagues, which continue to dominate television and digital platforms in Ghana.

Football as a Unifier

The 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season begins later this month, with the GFA optimistic that this landmark broadcasting deal will mark a turning point in restoring the league to its former glory
