Kumasi Police Inspector Killer Sentence For Life

BY Grace Zigah

The Kumasi High Court has sentenced Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi to life imprisonment after finding him guilty of the cold-blooded murder of his 26-year-old girlfriend, Victoria Dapaah, popularly known as Maa Adwoa.

The verdict brings closure to one of the most shocking cases of domestic violence involving a police officer in Ghana’s recent history.

The Tragic Incident

The crime occurred in April 2023 at Adum, a busy commercial hub in Kumasi.

According to prosecutors, Inspector Twumasi, then attached to the Ashanti Regional Police Command, confronted Maa Adwoa during a heated argument and, in a fit of rage, pulled out his service weapon.

Eyewitnesses testified that he fired multiple shots into her chest and abdomen at close range, killing her instantly.

The brutal killing, which took place in broad daylight, sent shockwaves through the Kumasi metropolis and sparked widespread outrage on social media.

Many Ghanaians demanded swift justice, describing the incident as a betrayal of public trust by a law enforcement officer trained to protect lives.

Flight and Arrest

Following the shooting, Inspector Twumasi fled the scene and went into hiding.

A manhunt was immediately launched by the police.

He was eventually tracked down and arrested in Sekyere, a district in the Ashanti Region, within days of the crime.

His arrest was met with mixed emotions—relief from the victim’s family and condemnation from the public, who questioned the psychological fitness of some officers carrying firearms.

Court Proceedings And Verdict

The case, which drew nationwide attention, dragged through the High Court in Kumasi for over a year.

Throughout the trial, prosecutors maintained that Twumasi’s actions were deliberate and premeditated.

They argued that his decision to shoot Maa Adwoa multiple times demonstrated clear intent to kill.

The defense attempted to argue that the shooting was not planned, claiming it occurred in the heat of the moment.

However, the court found this argument unconvincing.

Delivering judgment on Friday, October 24, 2025, the presiding judge stated that the evidence presented was “overwhelming and irrefutable.”

The judge described the killing as “a reprehensible act committed by a person who should have upheld the sanctity of life.”

Justice And Public Reaction

Inspector Twumasi was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment, a punishment the court said was meant not only to deliver justice but also to send a strong message that “no one, not even a police officer, is above the law.”

The verdict has been widely welcomed by the public and women’s rights advocates, who have long called for stricter penalties in cases of domestic violence.

The family of the late Maa Adwoa expressed relief that justice had finally been served, though they said no punishment could undo their loss.

The Ghana Police Service, at the time of the incident, condemned Twumasi’s actions and assured the public that he would face the full rigours of the law—a promise that has now been fulfilled with the court’s verdict.
