A tragic scene unfolded on the Achimota overhead bridge in Accra on Thursday, when a man plunged to his death in full view of shocked pedestrians and motorists.
The incident brought traffic to a near standstill along the busy route as bystanders scrambled to the scene in disbelief.
According to eyewitness accounts, the unidentified man appeared to be in a hurry, sprinting along the bridge moments before the fatal jump.
Clad in jeans trousers and a white long-sleeved shirt, he did not stop to speak to anyone. Without warning, he climbed over the bridge’s railing and hurled himself onto the road below.
“He was just running. No one really knew what was going on.
Before we could even think to react, he had already jumped,” a witness told reporters, describing the act as “too fast to stop.”
Bystanders rushed to assist, but their efforts proved futile as the man lay motionless on the asphalt.
Emergency responders confirmed that he had died instantly from the fall.
His body has since been conveyed to a morgue for preservation and autopsy.
The Achimota overhead bridge, which links several major road networks in the capital, is a notorious traffic hotspot.
However, incidents of this nature are rare, making Thursday’s tragedy a grim shock to residents.
Police have launched a full-scale investigation into the circumstances leading to the incident.
Authorities say the man’s identity is yet to be confirmed, and they are appealing to the public for any information that could help trace his relatives.
