Kylian Mbappe scored from the spot to send France into the FIFA World Cup 2026 quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory over Paraguay at Philadelphia Stadium on July 4, 2026.

The Paris-born forward struck in the 69th minute to break open an attritional contest, his seventh goal of the tournament. It moved him level with Lionel Messi on goals in the race for the 2026 Adidas Golden Boot, with Mbappe leading on assists, and left him one short of Messi’s all-time World Cup record of 20 goals.

Paraguay arrived in Philadelphia after knocking out Germany on penalties in the previous round, and they set up to frustrate. For much of the first half La Albirroja sat deep and denied space. France dominated possession but could not find a way through. Their efforts were mostly shots from distance and none troubled goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

Les Bleus were sharper after the break. Ousmane Dembele dragged a shot into the side netting from a quick corner. Then Manu Kone forced Gill into a full-stretch save with a powerful drive from outside the box as the pressure built.

The breakthrough came after VAR intervened. Desire Doue was brought down in the area and the referee pointed to the spot. Mbappe took responsibility and sent Gill the wrong way.

It was more than just the winner. The goal was Mbappe’s 11th in World Cup knockout matches, extending his own record. He also became the first player to score in the Round of 16 in three straight World Cups.

France will now turn to Boston Stadium on July 9 for a quarter-final against Morocco. The Atlas Lions advanced by beating co-hosts Canada in the opening last-16 tie and will provide a very different test after Paraguay’s defensive block.
