Ghana’s World Cup Dream Ends As Arias Goal Sends Colombia Into Last 16

Ghana’s campaign at the 2026 FIFA World Cup came to an end in the early hours of Saturday, July 4, 2026, after the Black Stars fell 1-0 to Colombia in the Round of 32 in what became a match defined by early injuries and a single clinical finish.

The game started with promise for Ghana. Midfielder Thomas Partey tested Colombia goalkeeper Camilo Vargas with a long-range strike inside the opening minutes, but his effort drifted just wide. That early optimism faded quickly as both sides were forced into changes. Colombia lost striker Jhon Córdoba to a groin injury and brought on Luis Suárez, while Ghana suffered their own setback when right-back Marvin Senaya, who tried to play through a hamstring problem, was taken off before the 15th minute and replaced by Alidu Seidu.

It was the substitute who made the immediate difference. Moments after coming on, Suárez delivered a cross to the back post where Jhon Arias was left unmarked.

The winger side-footed it home in the 14th minute to give Colombia the lead, and from there the South Americans dictated much of the first half. Luis Díaz came close to extending the advantage but fired wide from a good position, while Ghana goalkeeper Lawrence Ati Zigi kept the scoreline at 1-0 with a sharp save to deny Johan Mojica’s header from Daniel Muñoz’s cross just before halftime.

The best chance after the break came from Antoine Semenyo, who drove into the box and pulled the ball across goal, but no Black Stars player was there to tap in. Colombia continued to threaten on the break. Díaz thought he had scored early in the second half but was flagged offside, and minutes later he was through legally only to be denied again by Ati Zigi.

With time running out, head coach Carlos Queiroz reshuffled his attack. Elisha Owusu and Abdul Fatawu came on for Kwasi Sibo and Iñaki Williams midway through the second half, followed by Ernest Nuamah and Prince Adu. Despite the fresh legs, Ghana struggled to break down a compact Colombian defense.

Colombia themselves had further chances, including a tame header from Davinson Sánchez and a long-range effort from substitute Juan Quintero that went just wide.

Ghana pushed for an equalizer in the closing stages but rarely troubled Vargas. In the end, Arias’ 14th-minute goal stood as the winner, sending Colombia through to face Switzerland in the last 16.

The result ends another early exit for Ghana at the World Cup. The Black Stars, four-time African champions, have now struggled to advance past the knockout stages since their quarter-final run in 2010. Queiroz, who took over the side with the mandate to rebuild the team’s identity, will now face questions about how the squad adapts to his system after a tournament where injuries and a lack of cutting edge in front of goal proved costly.
