The senior national team, the Black Stars, has dropped two places in the latest FIFA rankings released on April 1, 2026, highlighting growing concerns about the team’s form and stability just months before the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The new rankings place Ghana 74th in the world, down from their previous position, while the team remains 14th on the African continent.
The latest decline reflects ongoing struggles with consistency, despite the team’s successful qualification for the global tournament.
The drop follows a difficult international window in which Ghana faced stronger opposition, exposing weaknesses in organisation, cohesion, and match sharpness. These performances have raised questions about the team’s readiness as preparations for the World Cup intensify.
The recent form has been uneven. Although the Black Stars topped their qualifying group in late 2025 to secure a place at the World Cup, their broader competitive record has been less convincing.
The team notably failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a setback that contributed to an earlier fall in the rankings to as low as 77th before a modest recovery.
The latest ranking setback also comes amid significant changes within the technical setup. The Ghana Football Association parted ways with head coach Otto Addo on March 31, just a day after the defeat to Germany in an international friendly. As of now, the Association is yet to announce a replacement, leaving uncertainty around the team’s leadership heading into a crucial phase of preparation.
On the African stage, Ghana continues to trail behind leading football nations such as the Morocco national football team, Senegal national football team, and Nigeria national football team, all of whom rank higher globally and have shown stronger recent form.
Globally, the France national football team has climbed to the top of the rankings, displacing the Spain national football team following recent international results.
With the World Cup fast approaching, Ghana faces mounting pressure to stabilise performances, rebuild confidence, and establish a clear technical direction.
The appointment of a new head coach is expected to play a critical role in shaping the team’s final preparations as they aim to compete strongly on the global stage.
