Ghanaian rap star Medikal has taken another decisive step onto the international stage after his landmark “Beyond Kontrol” concert in Accra secured a prestigious nomination at the 43rd edition of the International Reggae and World Music Awards (IRAWMA), placing the hip-hop movement in global spotlight.

The nomination, which falls under the highly competitive Concert of the Year category, is tied directly to Medikal’s historic headline performance at the Accra Sports Stadium—a venue traditionally reserved for national sporting events and large-scale international shows.

For a Ghanaian hip-hop artist to mount a full-scale concert at the stadium marked a defining moment, not just for his personal career, but for the genre’s evolving cultural legitimacy in the mainstream entertainment space.

Founded in 1982, IRAWMA has built a reputation as one of the world’s longest-running platforms dedicated to recognising excellence in reggae, world music, and global cultural expression.

Over four decades, the awards scheme has honoured influential figures from the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, and North America, positioning itself as a respected international institution within the global music ecosystem. As a result, nominations from IRAWMA are widely viewed as indicators of international relevance, cultural export value, and cross-border influence.

Medikal’s recognition comes against the backdrop of a steady career evolution that has seen him rise from underground rap circuits to mainstream dominance.

Once regarded primarily as a street-inspired lyricist, he has gradually transformed into one of Ghana’s most commercially successful hip-hop acts, consistently commanding airplay, digital streams, and live audiences across the country.

The “Beyond Kontrol” concert itself symbolised that transition. Industry insiders described the show as one of the most ambitious hip-hop productions ever staged by a Ghanaian artist, featuring large-scale stage design, professional lighting rigs, coordinated performance direction, and a high-energy setlist that blended old hits with contemporary chart-toppers.

Audience engagement, crowd control, and production quality were widely praised, placing the event in a different category from conventional arena shows.

IRAWMA’s Concert of the Year category is not based on crowd size alone. It evaluates production standards, audience experience, cultural impact, and overall execution.

Observers within the creative industry argue that Medikal’s nomination reflects how Ghanaian live music production—especially within hip-hop—has matured into a globally competitive product.

Beyond live performance success, Medikal’s 2025 dominance was further reinforced by his breakout hit single “Shoulder”, which emerged as one of the most commercially successful songs of the year.

The track enjoyed heavy rotation on radio, strong digital streaming numbers, and sustained presence in public spaces, from clubs to social media platforms, solidifying his relevance across multiple demographics.
