Minerals Commission Defends Revocation Of Adamus Mining Lease Over ‘Serious Breaches’

BY Nadia Ntiamoah

The Minerals Commission has justified the revocation of mining leases held by Adamus Resources Limited, insisting the decision was necessary to protect national interest following what it describes as widespread violations of the mining laws.

At a press briefing in Accra, the Commission’s Chief Executive Officer, Isaac Tandoh, stated that the action was based on evidence gathered during investigations and not influenced by political considerations.

According to him, the company engaged in unlawful mining practices, including the unauthorised assignment of portions of its concession and conducting operations without required regulatory approvals.

“This decision was neither arbitrary nor politically motivated. It was a lawful, evidence-based action taken to protect the natural resources, environment, and public interest,” he emphasised.

The Commission further disclosed that it is working with the Attorney General’s office to pursue possible legal action against those found culpable.Tandoh indicated that prosecution remains a likely outcome depending on the findings of ongoing investigations.

The enforcement action follows a directive by the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah to revoke the Akango, Salman, and Nkroful mining leases previously granted to Adamus Resources Limited.

The decision, announced on April 26, 2026, was based on findings presented by the Minerals Commission, which pointed to multiple breaches of mining regulations.

Authorities say the revocation forms part of broader efforts to strengthen oversight within Ghana’s extractive sector, particularly amid persistent concerns about illegal mining activities and environmental degradation.

In recent years, government has intensified its crackdown on unauthorised mining, commonly known as galamsey, due to its damaging effects on water bodies, forest reserves, and local livelihoods.
