The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been plunged into mourning following the death of one of its longest-serving regional executives, Joseph Kobina Ade Coker.
The seasoned politician, who played a pivotal role in the party’s grassroots mobilization efforts in the Greater Accra Region, passed away on Saturday, May 31, 2025, at the Bank Hospital in Accra after a short illness.
Party insiders confirmed the news by describing his passing as a significant loss to the party and the wider political community.
He was 69.
Ade Coker served as the Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the NDC from 2009 until 2022.
Over his 13-year tenure, he became a central figure in regional politics, overseeing numerous elections and political campaigns.
Under his leadership, the NDC maintained an electoral presence in the region, even in periods when the party was in opposition.
His journey as regional chairman came to an end in 2022 when he was unseated by Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore during internal party elections.
Despite the defeat, he remained an influential voice within the party, often providing commentary and strategic advice on electoral affairs, particularly in the volatile Greater Accra Region.
Beyond politics, Joseph Ade Coker had a notable background in sports administration.
He once served as a Vice Chairman of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), where he contributed to the management and development of football in the country during a crucial period in the sport’s restructuring.
Tributes have begun pouring in from political figures, party faithful, and sports administrators alike.
Many have remembered him as a dedicated public servant who worked tirelessly for both political development and sporting excellence in Ghana.
The NDC national leadership is expected to release an official tribute in the coming days.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced, but party sources suggest discussions are underway to honour him with a befitting farewell.
