What began as a celebration of progress and community upliftment has turned into confusion and outrage, after a newly commissioned four-seater toilet facility in Adjiringanor near East Legon was demolished less than 24 hours after its unveiling.
The facility, built to serve residents who have long lacked proper sanitation, was officially commissioned by Akosua Manu, popularly known as Kozie, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 parliamentary candidate for Adentan, just a day before its sudden destruction.
“I’m deeply dismayed and saddened by the sudden demolition of the newly commissioned four-seater toilet facility in Adjiringanor by individuals claiming to be officials of the Ghana GRID Company (GRIDCo),” Akosua Manu said in a statement posted on social media.
“This facility was constructed in direct response to the urgent sanitation needs of residents who, for years, have lived without access to a decent and hygienic place of convenience.”
Sources within the community say the demolition was carried out by men purportedly acting on “orders from above,” a phrase many have interpreted as pointing to politically motivated interference.
The timing and nature of the destruction have raised eyebrows, especially given that the only section destroyed was the portion of the structure bearing Akosua Manu’s name.
“It’s funny that GRIDCo had no issues while it was being constructed,” a community member commented.
“But now that it’s completed and officially handed over, they’ve come to destroy it. And the only part they broke is the section with her name on it.”
Though GRIDCo has yet to officially respond to the accusations, political observers and residents alike are questioning the rationale behind the action.
For many, the incident has reinforced fears of increasing political tensions as the 2028 elections approach.
“This is not just an attack on infrastructure,” Akosua Manu continued.
“It is an attack on community development, public health, and the dignity of the people. We must not allow impunity to take root where efforts to alleviate suffering are concerned.”
The incident comes amid a broader pattern of escalating partisanship in community development efforts, where initiatives associated with rival parties often face obstruction or sabotage.
Akosua Manu, however, remains defiant. “I remain resolute in delivering, people-centered solutions to the people of Adentan and beyond and will not be deterred by intimidation, sabotage, or acts of bad faith,” she said.
“I urge residents to remain calm as we pursue the appropriate channels to ensure justice is served and the facility is restored.”
