A wave of internal unrest is sweeping across the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as President John Dramani Mahama’s recent nominations for Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) spark outrage among party grassroots.
From the Upper West Region to Ashanti and the Northern belts, youth groups and local executives are rising in defiance, accusing the party’s leadership of ignoring popular consensus in favour of political favouritism
Wa On Fire
The epicenter of the latest unrest is Fongu, a suburb of the Wa Metropolis, where angry NDC youth on Friday took to the streets in protest over the nomination of Alhaji Nuru Danwana as Municipal Chief Executive.
Their preferred candidate, Salifu Tamah, was allegedly sidelined despite strong local backing.
In a chaotic scene, demonstrators blocked major roads with burning tyres, chanting slogans and warning the party of electoral consequences.
Though security personnel were later deployed to restore calm, the incident has exposed growing discontent between local branches and the national executive committee over decision-making processes.
Talensi Office in Flames
In the Upper East Region, the situation escalated further when the NDC constituency office in Talensi was gutted by fire on Saturday morning.

According to Asaase Radio, fire officers are currently investigating the cause, though sources on the ground suggest the fire may be linked to protests against the President’s nominee for District Chief Executive—who also doubles as the NDC’s constituency chairman.
Local sources indicate simmering tensions had boiled over following the announcement, with some members accusing the nominee of wielding influence unfairly to secure the position for himself.
Ashanti Region Rebellion
The firestorm isn’t limited to the north. In the Atwima Nwanbiagya South Municipality in the Ashanti Region, party executives have publicly rejected President Mahama’s nomination of Osei Wisdom Boama as MCE.
At a press conference, Constituency Chairman Abu Saddick minced no words.
Saddick and his colleagues argue that Boama contributed significantly to the party’s electoral loss in the 2020 elections and that his appointment would deepen existing divisions within the NDC.
Corruption Allegations
Complicating matters further are explosive allegations of corruption surrounding the Ghana School Feeding Programme.
Hajia Fati Adams, the NDC’s Women’s Organizer for Atwima Nwanbiagya South, accused some officials of selling portions of the feeding initiative meant for public schools.
Her comments have ignited fresh calls for accountability within the party, with many demanding an independent probe into how the nominations were influenced.
