The National Media Commission (NMC) has announced the appointment of new governing boards for the major state-owned media organisations, in a move expected to provide fresh oversight for the public corporations responsible for managing the country’s state media institutions.
The appointments were contained in a statement issued by the NMC on Wednesday, August 19, 2026, and signed by the Acting Executive Secretary, Paula Sanza Sanziri.
According to the Commission, the appointments were made in accordance with Article 168 of the 1992 Constitution and the relevant provisions of the National Media Commission Act, 1993 (Act 449).
The Commission said the appointments were made in consultation with President John Dramani Mahama.
The new governing boards cover four major state-owned media organisations: the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Graphic Communications Group Limited, Ghana News Agency (GNA), and the New Times Corporation.

The Managing Director of the New Times Corporation is also listed as a member of the board.
The corporation is responsible for the Ghanaian Times and other publications associated with the state-owned media group.
NMC invokes constitutional mandate
The appointments underline the constitutional role of the National Media Commission in relation to Ghana’s state-owned media organisations.
In announcing the appointments, the NMC specifically cited Article 168 of the Constitution, together with the National Media Commission Act, 1993 (Act 449), as the legal basis for the process.
The Commission also indicated that the appointments were undertaken in consultation with the President, providing the constitutional and institutional framework under which the new boards have been constituted.
The new boards will consequently assume responsibility for providing governance and oversight to the respective public media corporations, with the chief executives of the organisations serving as members alongside the appointed board members.
