The Nigerian entertainment industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo, who reportedly passed away at the age of 40 after battling cancer-related complications.
News of the actor’s death emerged on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, after several Nollywood actors, entertainment personalities and close associates took to social media to mourn him and pay tribute to his life and career.
According to multiple Nigerian media reports, Alex Ekubo had reportedly been battling severe kidney-related complications linked to cancer before his condition deteriorated in recent days. Reports indicated that he was rushed to a hospital in Lagos where he was later placed on life support before passing away.
His death was reportedly confirmed by colleagues within the Nollywood industry, including actress Funke Akindele, actors Bolanle Ninalowo, Godwin Nnadiekwe and talent manager Sam Olatunji, who shared emotional tributes online following the heartbreaking news.
Funke Akindele, in an emotional Instagram tribute, wrote: “Rest in peace, Alex. I tried to reach out to see you one more time, but I guess you knew best. May your kind soul rest in peace.”
Actor Godwin Nnadiekwe also described the news as devastating, saying Nollywood had lost “a rare soul.”
Alex Ekubo had reportedly stayed away from social media and public appearances for several months, sparking concerns among fans about his health. Reports noted that his last known social media post date back to December 2024.
Born Alexx Ekubo-Okwaraeke, the actor rose to prominence after emerging first runner-up in the 2010 Mr Nigeria competition, a breakthrough that opened the doors to a successful acting career in Nollywood.
Over the years, he became one of Nollywood’s most recognisable faces, starring in several successful films including Weekend Getaway, In The Cupboard, The Bling Lagosians, A Sunday Affair, Your Excellency and Áfàméfùnà: An Nwa Boi Story.
Known for his charisma, fashion sense and versatility on screen, Alex Ekubo built a strong fanbase across Africa and earned recognition as one of the most influential actors of his generation.
Beyond acting, he was also celebrated for his humanitarian work and youth advocacy, receiving several honours throughout his career, including recognition among the “Most Influential People of African Descent Under 40.”
Tributes have continued to pour in from fans, celebrities and colleagues across social media, with many describing his death as a huge loss to the Nigerian film industry and African entertainment as a whole.
