The New Patriotic Party (NPP) recently met with the Governing Board of the National Peace Council at its headquarters in Asylum Down, Accra, to discuss the alarming state of insecurity and electoral violence in the country.
The meeting comes against the backdrop of recent incidents, including the Ablekuma North re-run and the upcoming Akwatia By-election.
Concerns Over Electoral Violence
The NPP leadership expressed deep concerns to the Peace Council about the potential for violence in the Akwatia by-election, citing the party’s determination to protect itself and confront any aggression from the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The party emphasized its commitment to peaceful coexistence but made it clear that it would not hesitate to defend itself if necessary.
Electoral Violence
The NPP’s concerns are not unfounded, given the history of electoral violence in Ghana.
In recent years, there have been several instances of violence and intimidation during elections, which have raised concerns about the safety of voters and the integrity of the electoral process.
The Ablekuma North re-run, in particular, has been marred by allegations of violence and electoral malpractices.
Call for Peace Council’s Intervention
The NPP is calling on the Peace Council to take a more proactive role in preventing electoral violence and promoting peace in the upcoming by-election.
The party believes that the Peace Council’s intervention is crucial in ensuring that the electoral process is free from violence and intimidation.
